New Sanctions Against Iran
October 6, 2010
On September 28, Obama signed an executive order imposing financial sanctions against a number of Iranian government officials under the pretext of "defending human rights." The new sanctions block the assets of, and prohibit U.S. citizens from engaging in any business with the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the country's prosecutor general, and the ministers of welfare and intelligence and others.
The hypocritical slogans of "defending democracy and human rights" are being use to legitimize increasing U.S. military preparations against Iran and to cover over the real aims of U.S. imperialism. The motives behind U.S. threats and pressure against Iran are the exploiting, imperialist aims of the capitalist class. Iran, one of the world's largest producers of oil, has been a prime target in U.S. imperialism's so-called "war on terrorism" from the beginning. In addition, the U.S. has long sought to throttle the Iranian government for its refusal to accept U.S. dictate.
