Stop the War Which U.S. Imperialism is Preparing Against Iraq!
August 27, 2002
U.S. imperialism continues to march down the road to launching a fullscale war against Iraq.
The Bush administration has publicly declared that its official policy is to bring about "regime change" in Iraq using whatever means it deems necessary. Everyday, U.S. government spokespersons talk about preemptive war" and various invasion scenarios. Congressional leaders have repeatedly said that "war is inevitable" and the "only question is when." And all the while, the Pentagon is sending more military hardware and troops into the region and practicing "war exercises" with neighboring states.
Over the last 10 years, U.S. imperialism has already imposed immense suffering on the Iraqi people. In the Gulf War, the U.S. boasted that it had bombed Iraq "back to the Middle Ages." Since then, U.S. planes continue to regularly strike military and civilian targets, further killing the people and destroying the country's infrastructure. The economic sanctions prevent Iraq from rebuilding its economy and have claimed the lives of more than 1 million Iraqis. In short, the U.S. has been relying on its military power to dictate the economic, political and military affairs of the country.
The new war which the Bush administration is preparing would be an aggressive, imperialist war. Such a war would aim at bringing Iraq completely under the thumb of the U.S. and further projecting U.S. military power throughout the Persian Gulf region. Such a war will only lead to yet more U.S.. intervention and more wars. Such a war will further trample underfoot the edifice of international law as U.S. imperialism, in the manner of Hitler, asserts that its Might Makes Right.
The ongoing actions of the U.S. government show that it is literally thirsting for war. But its desire is one thing. Its ability is another.
In the face of the grave danger, peoples everywhere are coming out in opposition. Millions of people have joined in actions against U.S. aggression and to demand a peaceful resolution of problems. Many governments, even including most of U.S. imperialism's closest allies, have warned the Bush administration against launching war. Arab governments have repeatedly asserted that the U.S. will not be allowed to use their countries as bases for aggression against Iraq.
In sum, an intense political struggle is unfolding. Everyday, U.S. imperialism is preparing for war. And every day we must further organize ourselves and extend the anti-war movement.
The U.S. capitalist class has the military might and the political power to unleash yet another disaster on Iraq and the world but the warmakers are extremely weak amongst the people and in the sphere of public opinion. Our task is to mobilize the people into the struggle to stay the hand of the warmakers.
This struggle is a sharp expression of the general political situation. Today, U.S. imperialism is preparing new wars not only in Iraq but all over the globe. U.S. imperialism wants and needs war as the only way to maintain the crisis-ridden capitalist system and its colonial empire.
Only the peoples can stop the war program of imperialism. In the course of fighting against the war in Iraq, in the course of fighting against each and every aggressive step taken by imperialism, the people must organize themselves as an independent force. Our aim can be nothing less than overthrowing imperialism and implementing a foreign policy of peace and friendship which ends all U.S. intervention in other countries and recognizes the sovereign equality of every nation.
The people are the decisive force. We can bring into being a world of peace and friendship but only if we come into the political arena and assert ourselves.
