U.S. Provocation on Korean Peninsula
(May 20, 2002)
The Pentagon is sending warships to waters off the South Korean coast during the World Cup soccer finals, to be held in Seoul beginning May 31.
The deployment includes the U.S. Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier and other warships, as well as "units for biological and chemical warfare."
On May 11, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK) warned the United States to "act with discretion" and accused the U.S. of creating "an atmosphere of confrontation and escalating the military confrontation between the North and South Korea to disturb regional stability."
"The U.S. claims that this military development is meant to 'cope with threat of terrorism' during the World Cup. But this is nothing but a sinister intention to stage a new sabre rattling," the statement said.
