Protesters Stand With the Palestinian People
January 9, 2011
On Monday December 27 – the two year anniversary of Israel's 22 day war on the Gaza strip – protests took place across the world demanding an end to the ongoing blockade of the Strip.
In Gaza and the West Bank hundreds and hundreds of protesters vowed to step-up their resistance to Israeli aggression and occupation of their homeland. In London and across England, activists organized protests and called for Israel to be held accountable for its crimes against the Palestinians. Similar demonstrations condemning Israel for "Operation Cast Lead," and demanding an end to ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians, including an end to the brutal blockade of Gaza took place in Rome, Belgium, Canada, the United States and elsewhere.
"Operation Cast Lead" is Israel's name for the war it waged on the Gaza strip from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009. For 22 days Israel bombarded the strip from the sea, land and air. 1,500 Palestinians were killed and some 5,000 were injured.
Today, Israel – backed by the massive economic, military and political support provided by U.S. imperialism – continues its aggression throughout the occupied West Bank and Gaza. It continues its policy of assassinating political and religious leaders, expropriating more lands, destroying the homes and farm lands of the people, closing and bulldozing schools and other facilities, building an apartheid wall across the West Bank, etc. In Gaza, Israel continues its policy of collective punishment including by launching repeated military attacks, blocking the delivery of food, medicine, fuel and other supplies, keeping border crossings closed and preventing Gazans from traveling outside of the strip.
At the same time, the on-going events in Palestine show the growing strength of the resistance of the Palestinian people and their struggle to win genuine national independence and liberation by creating their own sovereign state. Democratic-minded people throughout the world support the Palestinian struggle and work to hasten its victory.
