The Palestinian Nation Will Survive and Win!

April 20, 2004

The following is reprinted from "The Worker," newspaper of the Workers Party, USA.

On April 14, George Bush officially announced the U.S. government's support for Israel's plan to permanently annex large sections of the West Bank and thus effectively prevent the establishment of any viable, independent Palestinian state.

In a White House statement and a letter to Ariel Sharon, Bush gave official U.S. sanction to the Israeli program of establishing illegal settlements on Palestinian territory in order to usurp Palestinian land and expand Israel's borders. Bush said: "In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli population centres, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949."

Bush also declared that the U.S. government no longer accepts (even in words) the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their lands and homes seized by Israel in 1948. Bush also gave his approval to the apartheid wall which Israel is building across the West Bank. At the same time, even as Israel continues to occupy Palestinian towns and kill the Palestinians on a daily basis, Bush demanded that the Palestinian people give up any resistance to Israeli occupation and aggression, saying "Palestinians must undertake an immediate cessation of armed activity and all acts of violence against Israelis anywhere."

Bush's announcements flagrantly violate international law, U.N. resolutions and several international documents and commitments signed by the U.S. government itself. Bush has publicly declared that U.S. imperialism and its creature, Israeli zionism, are preparing to annex Palestine and liquidate the Palestinian nation.

For the last 2 years, U.S. imperialism and its creature, the expansionist Israeli state, have been waging an-out war against the Palestinian people. Israel has repeatedly attacked and occupied cities and towns across the West Bank and Gaza, killing 3,000 Palestinians, wounding nearly 40,000 and forcing another 50,000 into exile. Israel has systematically sought to destroy the entire political, economic and social fabric of Palestinian society, assassinating political and religious leaders, destroying the infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority, expropriating more lands, destroying the homes and farm lands of the people, closing and bulldozing schools, etc. The apartheid wall being built for 450 miles throughout the West Bank will confine the Palestinians to 12% of their historic homeland, hemmed in and encircled by the Israeli military.

This attempt to liquidate the Palestinian nation is part of U.S.. imperialism's so-called "war against terrorism." As the U.S. military is occupying Iraq as a first step in recolonizing the entire Middle East, it simultaneously seeks to crush the Palestinians so as to stabilize its base of operations in Israel and extinguish any resistance to its domination.

At this time, so crucial to the future of humanity, the Workers Party calls on all democratic-minded people to rally in defense of the Palestinian people whose very survival as a nation is at stake. More than ever, the Palestinian liberation struggle is a call to the conscience of all humanity and a vital part of the resistance to U.S. imperialism's program for world domination.
