Self-Proclaimed "Friends of Syria" Step Up Their Activities

March 3, 2013

On February 28 U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry pledged $60 million in U.S. government financing for non-governmental political organizations in Syria. The pledge was announced after a "Friends of Syria" meeting involving representatives from 11 countries was concluded in Rome.

The 60 million dollar pledge will temporarily bolster organizations who are using threats and intimidation against Syrians who oppose a policy of allowing U.S. imperialism to dictate Syria's affairs.

The self-proclaimed "Friends of Syria" are smuggling a politics into Syria which embraces the "right" of foreign governments to nominate and back political candidates, to fund political campaigns without answering to the Syrian government, and to pave the way for big money interests to operate behind the scenes of the electoral process. Neither John Kerry nor any other "Friends of Syria" representative at the Rome conference did anything to explain why they are calling on the people of Syria to embrace this bizarre type of political system.

U.S. imperialism is trampling on the Syrian people's fundamental right to sovereignty and self-determination. The problem in Syria is precisely the interference and aggression of the U.S. and other imperialist powers.
