U.S. Policy of Backing Armed Groups in Syria Continues
June 24, 2012
Earlier this month senior U.S. officials admitted to the Wall Street Journal that the CIA has been involved with groups carrying out armed attacks inside of Syria.
New information about U.S. government backing of the armed groups of the Free Syria Army was revealed in a June 13 WSJ article on CIA involvement in Syria. According to the article, "U.S. intelligence operatives and diplomats have stepped up their contacts with Syrian rebels in part to help organize their burgeoning military operations against President Bashar al-Assad's forces."
Since the spring of 2011 the U.S. government has been encouraging armed squads infiltrating into Syria to carry out actions which would "pressure" the Assad government. Admissions by U.S. officials of CIA involvement in Syria expose the lie of the Obama administration which has consistently denied claims by the Assad government that foreign interference is behind the violence in Syria.
