Israel Bombs Syria

October 8, 2007

On September 6 Israel launched a military attack against Syria by entering its airspace with attack planes and dropping bombs in the northern part of the country. Israel refused to confirm until October 2 that the air strike had occurred. The bombing is a violation of Syrian sovereignty and it stokes tensions in a war which both U.S. imperialism and its surrogate Israel are spreading throughout the Middle East.

Syria has issued a formal complaint to the United Nations about Israel's violation of its airspace.

Underscoring its ongoing hostile stance towards Syria, U.S. government renewed harsh economic and political sanctions on the country on May 11, 2007. These sanctions were initiated in 2004 under the "Syrian Accountability Act." The law follows the same Big Lie logic which the U.S. used to prepare its war against Iraq. Syria is branded as a "supporter of terrorism" because it does not accept U.S. dictates and domination and because it speaks out in defense of the Palestinian liberation struggle. The law formally accuses Syria of pursuing "weapons of mass destruction" in an attempt to cover over the reality that it is the U.S. government which has militarized the Middle East, flooded it with hundreds of thousands of troops, carried out the savage bombardment of Iraq, threatened nuclear-first strikes against Syria, etc.

These events again remind the peoples of the real danger that U.S. imperialism may spread its "war against terrorism" to Syria other countries.
