U.S. Patriot Missile Deployed on Jordanian Soil
June 17, 2013
According to the Pentagon, the U.S. military has for the first time transferred a Patriot missile battery into Jordan.
After at least one of the U.S. missiles had arrived in Jordan for use in joint military training exercises, Pentagon spokesman George Little announced that Patriot missiles will be permanently stationed in Jordan. On June 15 Little said that U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel "has approved a request from the Kingdom of Jordan for a detachment of F-16s and Patriot Missiles to remain in Jordan following the conclusion of the Eager Lion Exercise next week."
The U.S. Central Command is coordinating the participation of the military partners involved in the June 9th – June 20th "Eager Lion" drills involving 8,000 troops. Eight of the participating states are full members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Poland, Turkey, the U.K., and the U.S.) and eight more participate in NATO "partnership" organizations (Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Pakistan.) Saudi Arabia is already being considered by NATO for membership in NATO’s ‘Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.’
The goal of the large-scale military exercises is to increase the ability of U.S. Central Command to mobilize its own and partner countries' weapons and troops in the event of a 'contingency' judged to require military intervention. According to U.S. Central Command's director of exercises and training, Army Major General Robert G. Catalanotti, "All of this combined training, led by the Jordanian armed forces, will come together over the next two weeks, strengthening the partnership between the 19 countries and increasing the ability of participating nations to operate together during any contingency."
"Forward military deployment" and aggressive military pacts such as NATO are key components of U.S. imperialism's strategy for world domination. On an international scale, U.S. imperialism is trying to assert itself as the sole superpower by relying on its military power and imposing the doctrine that "Might Makes Right" on the peoples of the whole world.
