From Sanctions to Super-Profits: The Rapid Handover of the BHMB Plant

June 2, 2026 - In late May, the Nicaraguan government announced it was returning an $80 million gold processing plant to its original U.S.-linked corporate owners. This sudden reversal followed weeks of mounting pressure, including the looming threat of a World Bank tribunal and strict U.S. Treasury sanctions targeting Nicaraguan officials. To justify these sanctions to the public, Washington waved the familiar banners of fighting "human rights abuses" and defending "democracy".

For over a century, the U.S. monopoly capitalist class has treated Latin America as its exclusive "backyard," driven by the absolute economic need to export capital, extract super-profits, and monopolize raw materials. The U.S. government does not actually care about the rights of the Nicaraguan people; the only "human rights" it defends are the rights of the capitalists to exploit the globe. It cares only about ensuring an uninterrupted flow of gold into the coffers of foreign monopolies and keeping the region permanently dependent on Wall Street.

This calculated financial coercion lays bare the reality that the so-called "free market" relies entirely on imperialist dictate. We must stand in unconditional solidarity with the oppressed nations of Latin America. To stop this endless plunder, the working class must organize independently and target the capitalist-imperialist system that thrives on the extortion and enslavement of sovereign nations.
